Overview

The proportion of foreign workers in South Korea’s construction industry has been steadily increasing, particularly in day-labor positions such as public infrastructure projects, including sewer, streetlight, and road works. These workers often face unstable employment and limited access to fair benefits, including retirement allowances. To ensure proper protection and rights, the government introduced regulations such as Article 13, Paragraph 4 of the Construction Workers Act, which mandates verification of working days through smart card systems. This regulation helps guarantee accurate calculation of retirement benefits and promotes fair treatment, contributing to improved labor conditions for all day-labor workers on construction sites.

Challenges

Many construction companies, including Hyundai E&C and POSCO E&C, require user-friendly smart card terminals that can be easily understood and used by the growing number of foreign, day-labor workers. Moreover, construction sites present unique challenges, including temporary layouts, limited power supply, and environments where wired installations are not feasible. These conditions highlight the critical need for an electronic system that not only ensures reliable tracking and transparency but is also specifically designed to accommodate the complex and dynamic nature of construction sites.

Solution

Understanding these requirements, UNION Biometrics developed smart card terminals in multiple formats. To ensure ease of use for foreign workers, the terminals feature a simple, intuitive user interface with clearly labeled buttons and support for five different languages.

In the construction industry, each site is often temporary, with limited power supply and areas where wired installation is not feasible. To address these challenges, we provide new portable terminals (M400) and tablets (T-500) that can operate on battery power for up to 8 hours, ensuring uninterrupted operation throughout the workday. For sites that require device installation on container boxes, we also offer wall-mountable terminals (W400), designed with enhanced durability to withstand outdoor conditions such as wind, dust, and other environmental factors. A clear understanding of each construction vertical is essential for UNION biometrics to deliver smart card authentication terminals that address the unique requirements of every site.

Value Delivered

The smart card terminals feature a user-friendly interface designed for the growing number of foreign workers, allowing them to easily operate the system. At the same time, the terminals adapt to the challenging conditions of construction sites, providing transparent solutions for workers and effectively addressing the current demands of the industry.
